How Much Wire Will You Need?

Before you buy more wire, check the product’s contents for how much wire is included in the underground fence package that you are purchasing. Many of the underground fences that we offer usually come with 500 feet of wire. Also, check the wire chart below for how much wire you will be using. What Kind of Wire to Use?

It is important that ONLY Burial Approved wires be used with an underground fence. Since the wire is going to be outside and exposed to the elements, you want a wire that is going to be durable enough to withstand the abuse. Burial Approved wires have a long lasting waterproof Polyurethane coat and a solid copper core.

20-Gauge vs. 18-Gauge Wire

The standard for many underground fence devices is a 20-Gauge wire. A 20-Guage wire is ideal for a yard with little vegetation, smooth and/or loose soil, few trees, and for lying next to a fence. An 18-Guage wire is ideal for a yard with many trees, thick vegetation, rocky soil, and suggested for above ground installation. An 18-Guage wire can be purchased with your system with our Wire Upgrade option.
